Alex, fair enough but look at the last few tournaments, we've stuggled against mediocre opposition and rarely seem to score goals as freely as we once did.

Re: England v Russia
To win games you need the right players. We had lots of fizzy trickery but you just longed for an Antonio type player. A bit of directness would help.

Russia were shit weren't they, Romania were much better?

Football logic. France struggle = 'Romania are a good side'. England dominate = 'Russia must be shit'.

Re: England v Russia
England did play well first half but unfortunately the game is played with two halves, and we were fucking shite second half, I had the feeling France could step up a gear when needed but did enough to win against a good Romanian side

Re: England v Russia
Whilst it was a good performance there's not enough goals in the team. I'd definitely have Sturridge in there in place of either Sterling or Lallana.

Re: England v Russia
England were excellent in the first half especially. As well as they have played in a tournament for a long time.
Should have won 3-0, that wouldn't have flattered them.
My only thought is that 'missed chances' & 'bad luck' may follow players like Lallana & Sterling around.

France looked a bit rusty & short of competitive games. But I know Griezmann & Pogba for example are better than they showed & have improvement in them. They are contenders but like all the likely winners ...: Spain, Germany, Belgium mainly they aren't perfect. All have weaknesses

Alex.

Who won their game, France or England?

This is tournament football and it's the same ol shit from us

Re: England v Russia
But the "good performance, shame about the result" line is EXACTLY what we saw in the last world cup.

We should have won that yesterday, we were all over them. But we have serious issues in the final third of both ends of the pitch. And if we keep picking Lallana and Sterling, those issues are likely to continue going forward.

France easily played better than England, were YOU actually watching the games?

Re: England v Russia
Only 3 games won in 10 years pof tournament football (that's 5 tournaments)

The group stage is only 3 games, lots of pressure now to beat Wales which imho we won't. Playing well is encouraging but points are all that count and once again it's another let down.
Sterling is brain dead as well as having no end product, not improved at all and has no right to be starting.

Re: England v Russia
I think people are being harsh about what was a good performance.
The only issues were the finishing, the presence of Sterling, and the absence of Vardy.

I'd say you're out performing both Romania and France if that helps, V son?

Who looked better in their opening game - England or France? If anyone says France I don't believe they saw the games.

Re: England v Russia
I didn't see much wrong with anything Roy did.
He put out an attacking side. We were by far the better side, Rooney was very good in the position he played, particularly in the first half but he ran out of steam.
We lacked cutting edge up front, something which we shouldn't given the players on the pitch. Wasted lots of opportunities. Rooney was very unlikely with his strike, amazing save.

Kane was poor and should have been pulled after 65/70 mins and Sterling was involved but showed an incredible lack of football intelligence and end product - much like a lot of others who could have gone in his place. Sterling was rightly pulled and it was the right move to put a more defensive winger on when you know the opposition are going to commit everyone forward.

Our defence is poor and there aren't good defenders who should have gone instead. Unless we bang in a few then this kind of thing can easily happen.

If you take out the fact he doesn't pick average West Ham players for England, Roy is the best England manager we've had in a while. Not the most charismatic but he's given young players a chance which will benefit in the long run. Still think we'll have a decent tournament but don't feel we are anywhere near good enough to be winners.

Guillem Balague on twitter - "Brilliant words about an exciting #ENG in European press as they look at performance. Negative words heard in England as they look at result"

Couldn't agree with him more. There just seems to be an in-built negativity towards England here irrespective of performance. We were exciting, entertaining, aggressive, skillful, progressive, attacking. Exactly what I've wanted to see from us for years, maybe decades. I literally can't believe the negativity towards that performance.

Alex we didn't start Italia 90 playing with a sweeper the players suggested to Bobby Robson we change to their preferred way of playing after injuries to Bobby Robson and the useless Steve McMahon in the opening games

Oh and Roy Hodgson is a fraud that should be nowhere near the national team

Re: England v Russia
Sven - I agree about Lallana and Sterling. They have no end product but do enough to make people think lots of goals and chances are just around the corner.

Was very similar in the world cup. We come away thinking "How have we lost that game?" but the answer is quite simple.... we don't take our chances.

We need to start doing so on Thursday. If we don't get out of this group it will be a disgrace.
